The Lasik Eye Surgery Procedure

Lasik eye surgery is an operation that can correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. However, Lasik eye surgery is not for those with certain conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. Those who also don’t like wearing contact lenses or reading/correction glasses can also opt for this operation so that they won’t need to depend on contacts or glasses anymore.

Lasik stands for laser in situ kertomileusis. What the surgeon does in this operation is he/she re-shapes the cornea of the patient using a laser, in order for the patient’s eye vision to become better.

Lasik eye surgery is only allowed for those who are over 18 years old and who want to correct their vision. If there are people who want to have this operation but have suffered from an eye disease, infection or illness in the past year, they will not be allowed to have the Lasik eye surgery. To ensure whether you are a good candidate for this operation or not, the best thing to do is to consult an eye doctor or an ophthalmologist/optometrist.

However, the question on a lot of people’s minds usually is, “how to find the right surgeon?” Finding the right surgeon is an important thing to do because you will trust this person to work on your eye and of course, you will be hoping for positive results. Lasik eye surgery cost is very expensive nowadays, so, you will also be paying a lot of money. Therefore, it is important that you find someone who is experienced, trustworthy and has a good profile.
When finding an eye doctor and surgeon, you will need to do thorough research on the internet and perhaps it would also be best to even ask around, maybe your family and friends, for a few references.

The Procedure

What’s frightening about the Lasik eye surgery is that you will be awake the whole time and the entire procedure will take about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the condition of your eyes, and also if you are having both of your eyes repaired in the same session.

Before the operation begins, your doctor will give you an oral sedative, usually a mild one. In the beginning of the surgery, your surgeon will have you lie down on a reclining chair. Then, he/she will apply anesthesia into your eye, in the form of liquid drops, so that you will not feel any pain or discomfort during the entire operation.

Next, a holder will be placed in between your eyelids to prevent your eye from closing and blinking, as blinking can disrupt the process and it may damage your eye even further. Next, you have to make sure that your eye is positioned properly under the laser.

The surgeon will then mark your cornea with an ink marker before creating a flap. The flap will then be made with either a microkeratome or other mini surgical tools. Once the flap is created, it will then be attached to your cornea along with a suction ring which will help in keeping your eye still.

You will then be asked to look at a pinpoint light for a while. This is the laser that sculpts and fixes the cornea of patients. The duration of the surgery actually depends on the level of correction.

Once the operation is done, you will be advised by your doctor to rest for a few days. He/she will also give you the proper medications which you need to take based on your physician’s instructions.

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the eye’s optic nerve. If you have glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eye properly. Fluid pressure in the eye builds up and, over time, causes damage to the optic nerve fibers. Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. Get more information at www.geteyesmart.org.

Eye Surgeons and Cosmetic Procedures

Eye surgeons are one of the most revered professionals in the world. As the number of eye related illnesses continue to rise, a regular check-up with your local eye surgeon is now becoming the norm.

These professionals, better known as ophthalmologist surgeons can easily treat most of the eye problems that plague society. In this way, ophthalmologist treatments are specially designed to help patients achieve the highest quality of eye health.

Though cosmetic surgery may not be their core practice, several reputable eye surgeons perform a host of cosmetic surgeries.

Cosmetic Procedures

There are several cosmetic procedures that any qualified eye surgeon can perform on a patient. These procedures are used to rectify minor problems associated with eye. These include laser skin resurfacing, anti-wrinkle injections, as well as Thermage.

Anti-wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are used to remove wrinkle and frown lines from crow’s feet and forehead.
As natural as aging is, it often results in a person having several age lines or wrinkles across their face. Again, this is caused as the skin and face muscles start to lose their elasticity. These anti-wrinkle injections are the least invasive means for minimizing such wrinkles. They contain a muscle relaxant that focuses on the face muscles only. The whole procedure may tale less than ten minutes for the eye surgeon to complete. Results are varied and may be seen within 2 to 3 days after the procedure. Shallow crease lines are eliminated completely while heavy or deep crease lines are considerably improved.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser technology has been recently developed to aid in removing acne scarring and wrinkles from the face. This process is referred to as laser skin resurfacing. It works by removing all damaged superficial layers on one’s face, prompting the skin to produce new collagen which aids in improving skin texture and eliminating wrinkles. The whole procedure may take approximately 1.5 hours for a full face when carried out by a proper surgeon.

Thermage

Recently, new non-invasive treatments have been developed that helps in tightening one’s skin giving them a healthier look. The most common of such treatments is Thermage. Thermage utilizes radio frequency technology commonly referred to as Thermacool. This delivers a controlled amount of energy into the skin which in effect heats up the skin’s collagen. The procedure results in immediate tightening of the skin with the overall result being seen in just over two months. Unlike most other treatments which may require regular visits to your local eye surgeon, this procedure only requires one such treatment.
